BERNARD COHEN, MD - CREDENTIALS
Dr. Bernard Cohen is a recognized authority in the field of hair loss and hair restoration; and is certified by the American Board of Dermatology and the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery. Since 1974, he’s maintained a practice in Miami and Coral Gables, while actively serving on the pro bono teaching faculty at University of Miami, School of Medicine, Department of Dermatology. Within that department, Dr. Cohen holds the title of Clinical Professor-Voluntary Faculty, and was the Department’s former Director of Surgical Training. He’s received multiple awards for his dedicated service to the residency-training program.
Born and educated in Pennsylvania, Dr. Cohen earned his M.D. degree from Columbia University, College of Physicians & Surgeons. He performed his dermatology training at New York University’s Skin & Cancer Hospital, where he was chief resident. He then served on the faculty of NYU Medical School while serving as Chief of Dermatology at West Point Military Academy.
Since 2000, Dr. Cohen has been listed annually in Woodward and White’s “Best Doctors in America” and Castle Connolly’s “America’s Top Doctors.” He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and an active member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) – a medical society of over 1000 members, dedicated to disorders of hair loss and their treatment. In 2010 he was awarded the society’s highest honor — the “Platinum Follicle” for outstanding achievement in hair science and research.
Dr. Cohen has written multiple medical textbook chapters, most recently in Stough & Haber’s “Hair Restoration” and Unger & Shapiro’s “Hair Transplantation” the foremost medical textbook on the subject of hair. He has authored over 20 scientific articles and commentaries in the medical and surgical literature, and has lectured to more than 25 different medical and surgical societies throughout the world. Dr. Cohen has been awarded 3 US and 12 international patents for medical devices that he personally invented.
One of Dr. Cohen’s more significant contributions to the field of hair science has been a new technology called Cross Section Trichometry (CST). CST has received critical acclaim in human hair research, and has been adapted (as the HairCheck device) for use in the medical community at large. He has recently joined Hevia Cosmetic Dermatology, and is available for hair loss consultations several days a week.
